The goal of this project is to integrate and test established camera and electronic logbook technologies capable of collecting detailed operational and environmental data and synchronising the timing of this collected data with video images collected through on-board cameras. It will include a bycatch avoidance tool to avoid the occurrence of choke species restricting targeted catches in the deep water trawl fishery. This technological solution will be made available to the Portuguese deep-water trawl fleet. This proposal consists of three innovative new technological components which seeks to advance this cause to fisheries in the Blue Growth: 1. A modern data system for the collection, management and analysis of operational fishing data. 2. Integration of this data system with sophisticated electronic monitoring devices to provide an independent means of verification of fishing activities and operations. 3. Provide the deep-sea trawling fleet with a bycatch avoidance tool. 4. And contribute scientific data leading to an improvement in the understanding of elasmobranch bycatch in the deep-sea trawl fisheries of Algarve.
