Welcome to FCT!
The Faculty of Sciences and Technology is an organic unit within the University of Algarve (UAlg). It has scientific, pedagogical, cultural and administrative autonomy, as established in the Statutes of the University of Algarve and in its own statutes.
As it currently exists, FCT was created in 2008, as per the Statutes of the University of Algarve, which derive from the new Legal Regime for Higher Education Institutions.
The current FCT was formed from the merger of three faculties that had existed previously: The Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences, The Faculty of Science and Technology and The Faculty of Natural Resources Engineering.
The Faculty, like the University, is located in Faro, capital of the Algarve Region, in southern Portugal and southern Europe. In this region, the University of Algarve is the only public higher education institution.
The Faculty is located at the Gambelas Campus, next to Faro airport, where all of the University of Algarve’s organic teaching units are located.
The Faculty focuses on teaching, research and the dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge in the areas of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering; Earth, Sea and Environmental Sciences; Electronic Engineering and Informatics; Physics; Mathematics, Chemistry and Pharmacy.
Its mission is to promote higher education supported by scientific research, developed in its five nationally and internationally recognised Research Centres, thus ensuring courses are run that leading to various academic degreesbeing gained in higher education, in cutting-edge areas that are constantly up to date.
In pursuit of its goals of excellence, the FCT has established partnerships that provide its students and teachers with unique opportunities to access international exchange programs both in terms of training and research. The know-how established at FCT, combined with the dynamism of its members, also allows for the transfer of knowledge and technology, one of its effective contributions to society.
The Faculty's statutes are published in Diário da República, 2nd s, No. 103, of 28th May 2009 (Notice No. 10215/2009).
