Filomena Maria Coelho Guerra da Fonseca completed her Biology degree in 1987, by the Universidade de Lisboa, Faculty of Sciences. She is a Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences since May 1996, by the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen Faculteit voor Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen. After returning to Portugal, she obtained the equivalence to her PhD at the Universidade do Algarve in September 1996. At present she is an Assistant Professor at the Universidade do Algarve (Faculty of Sciences and Technology, Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology), and Researcher at the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA-UAlg), at the Molecular and Microbial Ecology lab. She has published 26 articles in international journals with referee system. She has supervised 10 MSc dissertations and 9 Degree thesis, and co-supervised 1 PhD thesis. She participates and/or participated as Principal investigator in 4 project(s) and as a team member (Researcher) in 9 project(s). In her professional activities she has interacted with 75 collaborator(s) in co-authorship of scientific papers. Her research and teaching work have been developed in the area of Natural Sciences with emphasis on Biological Sciences and Molecular Microbial Biology. Recently she spent her sabbatical leave at the CSIC-ICMAN at the University of Cádiz, with a grant from Fundación Carolina, to study the effect of diets containing plant derived nutrients on the intestinal microbiota and immune-related gene expression of seabass. In her curriculum Ciência Vitae the most frequent terms in the context of scientific and technological output are: molecular diagnostics; population genetics; molecular variability; molecular virology and microbial ecology.
