Dr A. Rita Carrasco (f), is an Assistant Researcher at CIMA/University of Algarve, since 2018. She teaching at UALG since 2019, in the disciplines of climate change impacts in coastal systems, and marine geochemistry. She is currently coordinating the scientific objective of CIMA Obj.3-Assessing and Mitigating global risks. She holds an MSc. degree in Water and Coastal Management (in 2006) and a PhD in Marine, Earth and Environmental Sciences (in 2012). Her main topic is coastal geomorphology, and her research interests triggered the physical and ecological interactions occurring in wetlands. In the framework of her doctoral thesis, she studied the physical processes that control the sediment dynamics of estuarine environments. Between 2015 and 2016, she was a visiting researcher at Delft UNESCO-IHE to explore modelling solutions to implement coupled circulation-sediment transport model for the Ria Formosa lagoon. Her investigation is now focused on understanding the biogeomorphologic adaptation and resilience of coastal wetlands to climate change, and the means to provide well-functioning ecosystems. She is interested in salt marsh restoration strategies and in optimizing wetlands-based solutions. Through her research activities, she developed collaborative relationships with researchers from national and international institutions. She was involved in 18 national/international projects, covering a wide range of scientific topics such as beach morphodynamics, estuarine evolution, inlet dynamics, storm impacts, coastal modelling and management, biodiversity and coastal conservation. She is currently participating in 5 research projects about natural hazards, coastal geomorphology and ecology, natural decarbonization in marsh habitats, and in LIFE Action Grant about ecosystems conservation, as an investigator. She published her findings in 2 book chapters, and 30 international journals, including top journals in earth sciences (e.g. Sci. Rep., Earth-Sci. Rev., and Sci. Total Environ.), 15 of these publications were led by her. She has participated in 43 international and national conferences, as author or co-author of peer-reviewed abstracts. She is a regular reviewer of the journals Geomorph., Est. Coast. Shelf. Sci., Remote Sens., Ocean Coast Manag, Mar Geol, guest editor of Front. Mar. Sci., and associate editor of the Journal of Integrated Coastal Zone Management. She supervised 4 MSc students and 3 internships between 2018 and 2021. At present, her group is integrated by 2 undergraduate students, 2 MSc students, 1 PhD student, and 1 postdoctoral fellow. This group is developing research on ecogeomorphology of natural and restored wetlands ecosystems, coastal resilience and climate change, biodiversity and conservation She is a member of the the EGU Biodiversity Task Force and Landscapes Live Organization.
