Aschwin Hillebrand Engelen. Recently appointed to led the Marine Microbial Ecology & Biotechnology at CCMAR, completed his PhD in Mathematics & Natural Sciences in 2004/01/16 at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, The Netherlands. Published >75articles in journals and 2 book chapters. Participated in numerous national and international events, several of which on invitation. Co-supervised over 20 MSc dissertation(s). His research originally was focused on (molecular) ecology of seaweeds, especially invasive seaweeds, their mechanisms of success and impacts. Over the last years his interest shifted to the importance of microbes in marine ecosystems and foundation species like corals, seagrasses and seaweeds. Especially the host-microbiome interaction in composition and function and its drivers is the current focus of research and how this can be applied for biotechnology, conservation and restoration. In his professional activities interacted with 279 collaborator(s) co-authorship of scientific papers. He has been leading various national research projects, work packages in European projects and collaborated n numerous national and international projects.

Linear-in-the-parameters oblique least squares (LOLS) provides more accurate estimates of density-dependent survival. Survival is a fundamental demographic component and the importance of its accurate estimation goes beyond the traditional estimation of life expectancy. Species specificity of bacteria associated to the brown seaweeds lobophora (dictyotales, phaeophyceae) and their potential for induction of rapid coral bleaching in acropora muricata. While reef degradation is occurring worldwide, it is not uncommon to see phase shifts from coral to macroalgal dominated reefs. Numerous studies have addressed the mechanisms by which macroalgae may outcompete corals and a few recent studies highlighted the putative role of bacteria at the interface between macroalgae and corals. Some studies suggest that macroalgae may act as vectors and/or foste. https://doi.org/10.3389/fmicb.2016.00316
