I am a biologist with a PhD in Biomedical Sciences with a strong multidisciplinary background at the intersection of experimental biology and the novel field of bioelectronics. My current interests are centered on cell physiology and bioelectronics with a focus on how the integration of these two fields can advance a largely unstudied area of cell-cell communication. I started my scientific career working on sulphate-reducing bacteria (BSc) at ITQB, but my focus shifted when I pursued a PhD on insect physiology and parasitology in IHMT. My PhD provided me with experience in invertebrate biology as well as in behavioral assays and gene expression studies. Following my PhD, I joined CCMAR as a Postdoctoral researcher, where I focused on cell biology and the optimization of strategies for the de-orphanization of G-protein coupled receptors in invertebrates using intracellular signaling assays including cAMP production, calcium mobilization and changes in electrical cell impedance in wild type and transformed mammalian cell systems.
Since joining CCMAR/UALG in 2018 as an auxiliary researcher I have implemented and optimized innovative technologies to establish alternative less costly, more informative and high throughput approaches for in vitro cell assays. Target areas of my research include: 1) novel marine protein bioactivity; 2) emergent bioelectronic devices for cell-cell communication; 3) in vitro approaches for toxicology studies using cell lines. In addition to my research, I am part of the CCMAR Service and Technology Center (CTS) where I provide technology development and scientific support. Specifically, I am fully responsible within the protein and bioassay services for Biosensors and Cell-based assays and in the Imaging Platform I provide advice and consultation for sample preparation and Immunofluorescence assays. My publication record is in several scientific fields and reflects my multidisciplinary background and scientific career to date. I have 33 scientific publications including 29 papers published in peer-reviewed International Journals and over 400 citations (Scopus), 2 book chapters and 2 conference papers.
